Medicare Podcast: Medicare Part B Explained: Coverage, Costs, and Why It Matters Most

Medicare Part B Explained

This Podcast Is About Understanding Medicare Part B

This episode of the Medicare Podcast focuses on Medicare Part B, the most frequently used — and often misunderstood — part of Medicare. Part B is responsible for most day-to-day healthcare, including doctor visits, specialists, outpatient procedures, and diagnostic services. Because of this, Part B has a greater impact on your ongoing medical experience than any other part of Medicare.

What Medicare Part B Covers

Medicare Part B covers medically necessary outpatient services and preventive care. This includes doctor visits, outpatient surgery, lab work, imaging, preventive screenings, and durable medical equipment. For most people, Part B is the part of Medicare they interact with the most.

Medicare Part B Premiums and Ongoing Costs

Unlike Part A, everyone pays a monthly premium for Medicare Part B. The base premium is set each year and can be higher for individuals with higher incomes due to Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts, commonly known as IRMAA.

Beyond the premium, Part B generally pays 80% of Medicare-approved charges. You are responsible for the remaining 20%, and there is no annual out-of-pocket maximum. For routine care, this may seem manageable. For serious illness or frequent outpatient treatment, costs can escalate quickly.

Why Medicare Part B Alone Is Rarely Enough

Because Part B has no cap on out-of-pocket spending, very few people rely on it alone. Supplemental coverage is often used to help manage financial risk and improve cost predictability.
